Top Tips for a 1920’s Theme Wedding

Vintage weddings have been trending over the past few years. The roaring 20’s is an era with lots of appeal, a decade that introduced Art Deco and big band jazz. 1920’s themed weddings have become increasingly popular since Downton Abbey and the release of the movie The Great Gatsby in 2013.

If you’ve been inspired by this classic era for your wedding theme, we have a few great ideas to get you started on your wedding planning.

Black and Gold

A classic colour palette for a 1920’s wedding is black, gold and white. Incorporate Art Deco style into your venue, using antique style calligraphy and monograms for table plans and place settings to create an authentic 20’s look. Add some Gatsby sparkle by putting glitter candles and intricate centrepieces on tables. Decorate the venue with anything vintage such as old books, suitcases, birdcages, vintage bottles. This era was big on luxury, so try adding pearls, rhinestones, crystals, feathers (especially peacock feathers) and flowers to get the desired look.

High Class Glamour

This era saw a big shift in women’s fashion. Brides had more choice than ever before on wedding gowns. Trumpet style gowns were very popular at the time, while a shorter style dress would be perfect if you are wanting to create the flapper look, which will ooze vintage class. 1920’s brides wore beautiful headpieces adorned with feathers, pearls, jewels and birdcage veils. Satin shoes and vintage jewellery will finish this luxurious classic bridal look. For the groom trying to emulate Jay Gatsby, wear a smart tailored tuxedo with shiny shoes. You could accessorize with a bow tie, top hat, white gloves and a cane to give an authentic look.

Gatsby Style Celebration

At your wedding reception, you can aim to transport your guests back in time to the 1920’s. Tasty Catering offer the following advice:

“The entire Roaring 20s time period revolved around Prohibition, which led to countless speakeasies and other types of gatherings that basically defined the 1920s.  You can have a ton of fun with this decade and the Prohibition Era by serving up “moonshine” drinks—whether they include alcohol is up to you.  After all, it is mostly about presentation.  Martinis and whisky drinks were also popular back in the 20s, so you consider also serving those to your guests. The one thing that you should not compromise on is the champagne.  Champagne towers, champagne toasts and champagne punches practically defined the types of Gatsby-esque celebrations that occurred during this decade.”

For your entertainment, hiring a jazz band and 20’s style singer will make your celebrations go with a swing. You could appoint a Charlie Chaplin impersonator to amuse your guests as well as a black and white photography photo booth with Gatsby style props.

Make a Sophisticated Departure

A beautiful classic car of the era would make for the perfect departure from your wedding. A vintage Rolls Royce Silver Ghost would look perfect for a sophisticated arrival and departure. Other classic vehicles could include a Bentley, a 1923 Peugeot Type 175 Torpedo Sport and a Fiat 529 A Sedan.
