The best mini-moon destinations in the UK

Whether it’s a dwindling budget or a busy schedule that’s preventing you from enjoying your dream honeymoon, or an extravagant city break or exotic holiday to some far-flung destination simply isn’t your thing, the mini-moon could be for you.

The mini-moon has become the perfect honeymoon option for couples who can’t or simply don’t want to spend lots of time or money on their getaway as newlyweds. The mini-moon is generally shorter than a traditional honeymoon, with couples choosing to holiday a little closer to home as a result. We’re fortunate to live in a country that’s full of beautiful mini-moon destinations. Read on to discover the best the UK has to offer for you and your new husband or wife.

Lake District

The Lake District, or ‘the Lakes’ as locals and visitors alike often refer to it, is a stunning area of outstanding natural beauty and a recently declared UNESCO World Heritage site.

Newlyweds searching for a tranquil getaway will find plenty of peace as well as breathtaking scenery courtesy of the Lake District’s picturesque mountains, lakes and rural landscapes. Stay in a luxury B&B or rent a stone cottage to enjoy the Lakes at its best. Days can be spent hiking, whilst come evening, there’s plenty of traditional pubs to cosy up with your favourite tipple.

Cambridge

Couples spending their wedding day at Leez Priory can start their mini-moon sooner rather than later by honeymooning in Cambridge. Based just a stone’s throw away from our beautiful wedding venue, Cambridge is a world famous university town that offers plenty to do and to see. It’s also extremely pretty with its honey coloured stone buildings and meandering river just adding to its charm.

Hitched explains why Cambridge is one of the sweetest spots in not just the UK but Europe, and the perfect place to spend some quality time with your other half:

“There’s something so nostalgic about a university city in England, and of all of the ones to pick from Cambridge has to be the most romantic. Built around the River Cam, this ancient centre of academia is the perfect place to get lost for a weekend. Snuggle up in a cosy pub over a Sunday lunch, risk punting yourselves along the river, or grab an ice cream (or hot chocolate) in Jack’s – our favourite gelateria.”

The Cotswolds

With its chocolate box cottages and quintessential English villages, the Cotswolds is known for hosting the most romantic getaways, which makes it a fitting destination for a mini-moon. The Cotswolds is however more than just a pretty picture. As well as hiking, biking and exploring, the area is a foodie’s dream.

Food loving couples can enjoy a number of culinary delights with lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants (some of which have Michelin stars) at every turn. The area is also proud to produce the finest and freshest ingredients. Be sure to try some local Double Gloucester cheese, which is famously used for the traditional art of Cotswold cheese rolling.

Isles of Scilly

Want the laid back vibe of being abroad without actually being outside of the UK? The Isles of Scilly are located 35 minutes off the coast of Cornwall but will leave you feeling half a world away.

There are five inhabited islands, each as beautiful, unique and unspoilt as the last. Some have beautiful lagoons and others have white sandy beaches to explore. Arrive by ferry or small plane, and start your mini-moon in style on one of its stunning islands.
