Honeymoons: Where to go in every month of the year

Choosing your honeymoon destination is one of the most enjoyable aspects of getting married. What better excuse can you think of for splashing out on the holiday of a lifetime? The only potential pitfall is being spoilt for choice! That’s why we’ve put together a handy guide to choosing your honeymoon destination based on the best places to visit for every month of the year.

January

What better way to see in the New Year as man and wife than in Australia? January is the height of summer in Australia. Imagine flying out of the UK on 29 December after spending Christmas with your families as newly-weds and then seeing in the New Year in Sydney by the famous Opera House before spending the next couple of weeks of January travelling around Australia, enjoying the glorious sunshine, swimming with dolphins and taking in some incredible views of places like Uluru.

February

Sunny tropical honeymoon destinations are particularly appealing for us Brits during the winter months as an escape from our seemingly never-ending long dark days. This makes visiting countries like Brazil at this time of year all the more attractive. Do you fancy hitting the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and soaking up the sun together for your first Valentine’s Day as newly-weds whilst your friends and family are all sat at home huddling together for warmth?

March

If you’re both adrenalin junkies who are into throwing yourselves down mountains, how about spending your honeymoon skiing? March is a great time to go on a skiing holiday. Three Valleys, Verbier and Val D’Isere are all romantic destinations to look at if you’re considering a snowy honeymoon.

April

Japan in the spring is extraordinary. The cherry blossoms delicately perfuming the air and scattering the ground like a pink blanket will make your honeymoon the most romantic holiday of your lifetime. Check out the contrasts that Japan is defined by whilst you’re over there. One day you’ll be visiting ancient temples, participating in tea ceremonies hosted by geishas, but then the next day you might find yourself whizzing to Tokyo on the high-speed bullet train to check out the bustling technological centre.

May

Due to the huge variety of activities on offer across all the different islands, @hitchedcouk says that ‘the Caribbean is the ultimate honeymoon destination’. May is the best month to visit the Caribbean because it’s when the costs are lower and the weather is perfect – not too hot and not too wet.

June

The Greek islands, especially Santorini, with its white-washed, blue-roofed buildings jutting out from the cliffs over the ocean, are exceptionally beautiful and romantic. They are also an affordable option for couples wanting to keep an eye on their budget. Of course, you can still splash out on a honeymoon in the Greek islands by staying in the most fabulous hotel available and doing every single activity or pampering opportunity that you fancy, as well as enjoying some haute cuisine dinners. June is the ideal time to visit Santorini for a honeymoon because the island isn’t too hot or too crowded as the summer season hasn’t fully peaked yet.

July

July is an ideal month to go on safari in Kenya. Whilst July is one of their coolest months, the average temperature is still between 23°and 28°C, which is ideal for spending the day bouncing around in a Jeep across dusty savannas trying to spot lions, zebras and elephants.

August

Croatia is one of the holiday destinations growing fastest in popularity among British travellers. It’s easy to see why. Croatia is one of Europe’s sunniest spots, has an excellent exchange rate with the pound and is one of the main filming locations for the hit TV show Game of Thrones. In addition to having stunning scenery, delicious food and friendly locals, it also has a rich history waiting for you to discover.

September

For any backpack-loving couples out there, this might be the answer for you! If you want to complete the Inca Trail in Peru then September is the month to go. September is also the best time to visit the Amazon basin. This is because the heat isn’t too intense (in fact the nights can be cold, especially when you’re at high altitudes) and the mosquitoes are less active, i.e., bitey!

October

For nature- and wildlife-loving couples, the Galapagos Islands are the ideal honeymoon location and October is the perfect month to go there. This is the month when the wildlife is highly active and the beaches can be teeming with sea lions and their pups. The weather in October has a daily average of 25°C, so it’s perfect for spending long hours outside observing animals and taking some exceptional photographs of your breath-taking surroundings.

November

India is one of the most popular holiday and backpacking destinations because of its history, culture, awe-inspiring architecture, delicious food and vibrant festivals. In November, India’s southern states are safely out of their monsoon period and there are plenty of festivals going on right the way across the country. You might even be lucky enough to time your honeymoon with Diwali, the festival of light, which is an exceptional sight that you will certainly never forget.

December

December isn’t just about Christmas, unless you want it to be! If you’re a Christmas devotee, then visiting Lapland might be the ideal honeymoon for you and your new spouse. Imagine sleeping in a snow-topped log cabin with open fires and in-house sauna and spending the day trotting through frosty forests of white snuggled into a reindeer-drawn carriage. The only issue with this option is that if you have children, you might have to bring them along as you being so close to Father Christmas might be too much for them to bear!
