Top 10 must have songs at your wedding reception

First dance

The music you choose for your wedding reception will set the tone for the event. As A Practical Wedding points out, “It isn’t always as simple as playing a few of your favorite songs and hoping everyone will join in.” Go classical and you’ll create a fairly formal feel on the day. Go cheesy and you’ll get kids and parents up on their feet and go for modern club anthems and your friends will probably make a beeline for the dance floor. Get the mix just right however and you’ll have everyone dancing their socks off till the lights come up.

1. Love is all around – Wet Wet Wet

Wet Wet Wet’s cover of The Troggs classic ‘Love is all around’ hit the charts in January 1994. Part of the soundtrack to the Rom Com classic, ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’, the song quickly became one of the most popular love tunes of all time. The single spent an incredible 15 weeks at number one, the second longest any song has ever spent at the top spot.

2. (Everything I Do) I Do It For You – Bryan Adams

The only track that’s spent longer at number one than ‘Love is All Around’, ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’ took up residence at the top of the charts for a record breaking 16 weeks. From 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, this emotional classic is guaranteed to get your dance floor schmoozing.

3. Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours – Stevie Wonder

This up beat number is an excellent choice if you want to get people up and dancing. Its irresistible sound will have grandparents and teenagers alike up on their feet and jostling for space on the dance floor.

4. Crazy in Love – Beyonce and Jay Z

Though this is one for the younger generation, there’s a good chance parents will know the song as well. A dance floor filler: this energetic, upbeat track is the perfect way to get the party started.

5. Happy – Pharrell Williams

Another modern classic, the joy and happiness of this song is contagious. Play it as you make your entrance into the reception venue, or any time during the evening to put a big smile on your guests’ faces.

6. Marry You – Bruno Mars

This appropriately named track is a must have for your wedding reception. Guaranteed to get your guests up on their feet, it will appeal to young and old alike.

7. Dancing Queen – ABBA

In many people’s opinion, it’s not a party unless at least one ABBA track makes the playlist. And if this classic crowd pleaser doesn’t get your friends and family up and dancing, nothing will.

8. Your Song – Elton John

Like ABBA, Elton John is a mainstay of the wedding playlist. This song is a great choice for the end of the night when you’re starting to wind things down and want to inject a bit of emotion into proceedings.

9. All You Need Is Love – The Beatles

The title really says it all with this one. Loved by everyone from your gran to your niece and nephew, this legendary song is a wedding must have.

10. (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life – Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

A fantastic choice for the final track of the night, this beautiful song will close your wedding in style and get your nearest and dearest on the dance floor for one last spin.
