2018, the year of the 3D florals: Wedding dress trends

If you’re looking for wedding dress inspiration, then look no further! Flowers have always been a huge presence on bridal catwalks every season, but this year 3D floral embellishments and applique have been a huge feature on dresses emerging from prominent dress designers’ collections. Designers like Marchesa and Pronovias showcased exquisite dresses with stunning flowers exploding out of them. If you love being the centre of attention, want to real shine on your Big Day and you love nature then this is the bridal trend for you whether you’re getting married this summer or next winter!

3D florals

This fabulous new wedding dress trend is based around creating a sense of symmetry between the traditional wedding dress and nature. Since flowers are already a major element of wedding ceremonies, it makes sense to use them as inspiration for dress designs. Nature has offered more inspiration, too. Butterflies, trailing ivy, leaves and petals have been spotted on wedding gowns – perfect for a bohemian, festival-inspired wedding.

Victorian Flower

The success of this trend might well be down to flowers’ connotations of romance. Everyone knows about the Victorians’ ‘language of flowers’, or floriography, which gave different flowers different meanings and symbolism (for example, a red tulip symbolises a declaration of love). You could even apply floriography to the design of your dress and choose flowers that represent your relationship with each other, in order to give your dress hidden meaning!

The use of 3D appliques also adds texture and drama to the dresses, making the bride completely unique and inimitable. There are so many different ways to embrace this 3D floral trend into your vision of your dream dress. It’s so versatile you can embrace it as much or as little as you want.  You might try covering your whole gown in applique from top to toe, or play it safe and understated with some minimal floral applique detailing on the corset.

Using Imagination

Because flowers play such an integral part of weddings and have done for thousands of years, this trend can lend well itself to any wedding style or theme, and suits any bride no matter her character or fashion-sense. It’s also a feature that would work well on most dresses, even coloured wedding gowns. If florals are going to be the theme of your Big Day, consider incorporating 3D floral applique into your bridesmaid dresses as well. It will have your guests wondering whether they’ve actually stumbled upon a Midsummer’s Night’s Dream-like fairies’ forest abode.

The trend for 3D floral applique designs doesn’t look like it’ll be stopping anytime soon. According to @theknot there’s a “Floral Look for Every Bride”, so if you have visions of looking like Titania on your Big Day then this might well be the bridal look for you!
