Grey is the new black when it comes to weddings

Although there were always a few grooms here and there that pushed the boundaries, in general black has been the preferred choice of the husband-to-be for years now. And though there’s no denying that a well tailored and well fitted black suit can still look fantastic, increasing numbers of grooms are opting to forgo the traditional monochrome wedding suit and choose something a bit different instead. One of the most popular alternative colours is grey. Smart and sophisticated, it offers the perfect solution to your sartorial dilemma.

Why go grey?

If you thought that the soft tones of charcoal were too understated or too boring for your wedding day, it’s time to think again. As The Idle Man explains “If you’re bored of classic black and overdone navy, try something a little slicker and opt for the subtle hues of a grey look.” Just as smart and formal as black, grey offers grooms the chance to choose a slightly more alternative aesthetic for their big day. What’s more, as grey isn’t so closely associated with weddings, you’ll be able to wear your beautifully tailored suit for a wide variety of special occasions in the future.

Choosing the right tone

Within the grey colour spectrum, there are lot of different options to choose from. For a summer or spring wedding, a light grey could be the perfect choice. For an evening do or a winter wedding a deep charcoal grey could work perfectly while a battleship grey or slate grey can also look great in the right setting.

Textures

As well as tones, you need to think about textures. The type of material you choose will have a big impact on the look and the feel of your suit, so make sure you try on a few different styles to find the texture that works for you. Remember that different fabrics have very different thermal properties, so if you’re getting married in the summer you may want to select a fabric that lets your body breathe.

Matching grey with other colours

One of the best things about choosing grey for your wedding suit is that it’s incredibly easy to match with other colours. Unlike blue and black which can both be a little inflexible, grey goes with almost anything. So whether you’ve chosen a pink, blue, green, orange or neon colour theme for your big day, you should be able to find a grey suit that works perfectly.
